In this role, you will serve as a member of a survey crew that performs technical work involving the various phases of surveying for design, construction, topographic, hydrographic, geospatial control points, and as-built surveys.
You will collect and provide surveying information for projects, identify and compute data points from drawings, and identify topographical elements for the collection of data.
You will review drawings for errors and omissions, research files to locate existing points and benchmarks, and maintain survey control point records.
You will maintain, calibrate, and operate a wide variety of surveying field equipment and data collectors, including cleaning, organizing, maintaining, and calibrating equipment.
You will utilize correct principles and practices to operate survey instruments such as GPS, base stations, total stations, digital levels, levels, and fathometers.
You will utilize survey software to perform specialized, technical, and mathematical computations and LisCAD survey software to download, upload and process data for technical surveying and mathematical computations.
You will create data base for survey points in Excel and verify the construction of horizontal and vertical location compliance as set forth in specifications.
You will research records, drawings and databases and maintain survey project electronic filing system.
You will provide data and drawings for contractor claims.
You will assist in project inspection on unique airfield construction projects.
You will notify inspector of potential problems and serve as a point of contact for contractor.
You will conduct βplan reviewβ and survey bid estimates on upcoming major construction projects and help ensure crew has necessary information to perform field work.
Who you are: Two years of experience may be substituted for one year of education:Experienced β You have four (4) years related field experience, preferably with a minimum of 1 year of heavy construction experience, education and training directly related to surveying.
Educated β You possess a High School diploma or GED equivalent.
Desired β We hope you have a two (2) year technical degree in surveying and six (6) years of experience in survey operations and the understanding of procedures and principles of construction and land surveying. We also hope you have knowledge of Leica instruments and LisCAD software.

Technologically Skilled β You are very knowledgeable of survey procedures and techniques, including the operation of survey instruments such as total stations, GPS, digital levels, and 3D scanners. You are familiar with surveying work in topography, 3D scanning, bathymetry, construction staking, as built surveys, jet line surveys, legal description and exhibits for property surveys, easements, leases, and able to take 360Β° photos.
Organized β You are aware and skilled in preparing documents that meet the drafting standards of the organization and storing/organizing your work in a way that allows for historical review.
Knowledgeable β You are trained in construction engineering / surveying concepts and terminology and skilled in performing topography, 3D laser scanning, bathymetry, construction staking, and as built surveying.
Strong Communicator β You are able to communicate effectively, orally and in writing as well work with others effectively to produce clear, timely, and accurate information.
What else you need to know:
Driverβs License β You will need a valid Washington State Driverβs License, or the ability to obtain one, is required in order to travel locally to project sites.
Work Schedule β Your normal work schedule will be Monday β Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (40 hours per week). Slightly more flexible start and end times are available in this role.
Work Environment β You will work indoors and outdoors, where field conditions may vary from exposure to outside elements on airfield projects in all types of inclement weather. Work may be in high noise environments, high traffic locations, sites requiring fall protection, in and over navigable water ways, steep slopes, thick brush, or uneven ground.
Washington State Residency Requirement β Employees must establish a residence in Washington state within 30 days of their first day of employment and must maintain a residence in Washington State during their employment with the Port of Seattle. If a position is eligible to telework, work performed while teleworking must be performed in Washington State.
COVID-19 Vaccination Requirement β Effective, November 15, 2021, the Port of Seattle will require that at the time of hire, and as a condition of employment, the successful candidate will be able to provide proof of their full COVID-19 vaccination status, as part of the hiring process. Overtime Eligible β You are eligible for overtime pay in this role.
Safety Requirements β You will be required to comply with all work rules, safety, and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) requirements.
Security Requirements β As the successful candidate, you must pass a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) background check as well as a criminal history background check with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Your employment will be contingent upon obtaining a Port of Seattle ID badge upon clearance.
Security Requirements β You will also be required to obtain a U.S. Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) Customs Seal within 30 days of hire and you must obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC) within the first three months of employment.
