The City of Tacoma is recruiting for the position of Surveyor in the classification of Chief of Party. This recruitment will be to establish a Civil Service Eligible List of candidates that will be valid for a period of one year, and that will be used to fill vacancies in any Department at the Tacoma Municipal Building or at Tacoma Public Utilities.
This position provides for support of design engineers in the Public Works Division as well as Construction Inspectors. We are looking for a highly skilled technician who has knowledge of professional survey practices and procedures, who can plan, organize, oversee, monitor and participate in the daily fieldwork of a survey field crew.
Our ideal candidate will be proficient in the operation and maintenance of state of the art electronic survey instrumentation data collection systems and processes, be able to read and interpret construction plans necessary to perform complex survey computations (using various software), to establish the location and elevation of elements based on those plans, and inspect deliverables for accuracy and correctness. Deliverables include: field note sheets, cut sheets, electronic data collection files, computation sheets, detailed maps and alignment profiles. The successful candidate will have experience in horizontal and vertical control networks, boundary control, topographical surveys and construction staking as well as the ability to interact professionally with fellow employees, contractors and the public.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
Position requires lifting objects weighing up to 75 pounds, climbing and digging.
Work includes an indoor and outdoor environment; subject to driving from site to site. An employee in this position is subject to working in high winds, rain and around potentially hazardous construction sites, busy traffic, construction equipment, fumes and noise. In addition, this position may be required to navigate and cover considerable distances with steep and uneven terrain and surfaces; must stand for extended periods of time, and be expected to stoop, crawl, crouch and hammer.
QUALIFICATIONS:
An equivalent combination to:
Graduation from high school supplemented by course work in engineering or mathematics
and
five years' increasingly responsible experience in the area of field survey,
including
three years' full-time experience in the operation of survey instruments.
Two years of college education in survey or engineering may be substituted for one year of the required experience.
LICENSES, CERTIFICATES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS
Valid Washington Driver's License at time of appointment with maintenance thereafter.
DESIRED QUALIFICATION:
Professional Land Surveyor (PLS) and/or LSIT certifications.
