www.starsurveyinginc.com[email protected]Star Surveying, Inc., of Friday Harbor, Washington celebrates the opening of its new office located in Anacortes, Washington at the corner of 12th and Commercial Ave. A Women Majority-Owned firm since July 2021, Star Surveying has provided survey and mapping services throughout the San Juan Islands for over 30 years and looks forward to serving its clients throughout San Juan and Skagit County.
In April, Star Surveying welcomed Kimberly Bourns, a Professional Land Surveyor with over 20 years of surveying education and experience to join the firm as Co-Owner and Senior Surveyor. Kim, along with a team of Star’s survey professionals are looking ahead at ways to invest in our company’s future and to support women in the trades.
Kim studied at Oregon Institute of Technology and Renton Technical College where she earned her A.A.S. degree in Civil Engineering/Survey Technology. After several years working as a field technician Kim took a position with W&H Pacific serving as Senior Survey Technician and Junior Project Manager. While working with W&H Pacific she was professionally introduced to the company’s then Survey Manager Robert M. Anderson who would later invite her to co-own with him at Star Surveying.
Kim is an experienced Project Surveyor, having worked on projects such as the Northgate Link Light Rail Extension to extend 4.3 miles of tunnels and rails and the Alderwood Water District where she established the survey control plan and provided detailed mapping for over 41 individual locations throughout the district.
Introduced to the San Juan Islands through her husband, Kim has spent many years visiting the family property on Stuart Island and vacationing on Lopez Island. “When the position with Star Surveying became available, I jumped at the chance to live and work in the beautiful San Juans.”
Star Surveying has been owned by Robert M. Anderson since 2007. A licensed land surveyor since 1981, Bob began his career in the 1970’s on Orcas Island when the firm operated under the leadership of Krabbe & Starr. In 1987, he accepted a position in Seattle specializing in government surveying and mapping projects throughout the Pacific Northwest. In 1999, Bob received an appointment from the United Nations to be the technical advisor in Bhutan for the National Urban Surveying & Mapping Group. After 5 years mapping in the Himalayas, Bob returned to the San Juan Islands and assumed the position of Chief Surveyor for Star Surveying, purchasing the firm in 2007.
Together, Bob Anderson and Kim Bourns look forward to the new opportunities ahead for Star Surveying
